Aman Gottumukkala Joins Elon Musk's xAI, Firebender Co-Founder Boosts AI Coding Tools

Aman Gottumukkala, co-founder of AI coding startup Firebender, has joined Elon Musk's xAI to work on "autonomous engineering" — AI systems that independently write, debug, and optimize code. Gottumukkala, a Texas A&M CS graduate and Y Combinator alumnus, previously built Firebender into a revenue-generating product integrated with Android Studio and JetBrains IDEs before the three-person team wound down operations.

The hire is part of a broader talent acquisition push at xAI, which recently announced plans to recruit financial professionals to support its Grok chatbot initiative. xAI has also added AI researcher Devendra Chaplot, signaling an aggressive buildup of both research and product talent. The pattern of acqui-hiring founders from revenue-generating startups suggests xAI is prioritizing speed-to-market over pure research.

The move intensifies competition in the AI coding tools space, where GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Devin already hold significant market share. Gottumukkala's JetBrains and Android Studio integrations could give xAI immediate reach into mobile and enterprise development environments, potentially embedding autonomous coding capabilities into Grok's product ecosystem.
