AMD agreed to buy World Labs, the spatial-intelligence AI startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion that is expected to close by the end of 2026. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. AMD shares eased about 4% on Monday as investors weighed the price against the strategic push into physical AI.

AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the San Francisco AI lab founded by Stanford computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion . The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, and Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Su said the purchase will strengthen the company's hardware roadmap , adding in AMD's announcement that building compute platforms for the next generation of AI "requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving."

World Labs builds spatial-intelligence, or "world," models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image and video inputs, along with tooling for robotic learning and simulation. The startup had raised roughly $1 billion in funding before the deal. For AMD, the logic is less about buying revenue than about buying model expertise: as AI workloads move toward reasoning, robotics and simulation, a chipmaker that understands where models are heading can shape its accelerators and software stack around them. Market commentary framed the move as a direct challenge to NVDA, which has built its own world models and partnered with startups in the space .

The initial market reaction was cool: AMD stock eased about 4% on Monday while Nvidia gained about 1.8%. Measured against AMD's market value of roughly $1 trillion, the share issuance is small, so near-term dilution is modest; the larger questions are execution and integration of a research-heavy team into a hardware company. The deal ranks as AMD's second-largest acquisition, behind its Xilinx purchase. Watch for regulatory review timing, how AMD positions World Labs' models within its accelerator and software roadmap, and whether physical-AI customers follow.
