Amgen's Imdelltra with AstraZeneca's Imfinzi improves survival in late-stage small-cell lung cancer trial

AMGN and AstraZeneca reported on September 8, 2026 that combining AstraZeneca's immunotherapy Imfinzi with Amgen's targeted therapy Imdelltra significantly improved overall survival in patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer in a late-stage trial. Reports of the readout also describe an improvement in progression-free survival, with the combination studied as a first-line maintenance treatment.

Extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer is one of the harder settings in oncology, with historically short survival and few durable options after first-line chemotherapy and immunotherapy. A combination that moves overall survival in the maintenance setting is therefore clinically meaningful on its own terms, independent of the commercial read.

The companies did not release numeric survival figures with the announcement, so the magnitude of the benefit is not yet public. That is a standard sequencing choice, with full data typically reserved for a medical conference or a peer-reviewed publication, but it does mean the result cannot yet be compared against competing regimens.

For both companies the strategic logic is combination positioning. Imdelltra is Amgen's entry in this indication and pairing it with an established checkpoint inhibitor extends its addressable use rather than competing head-on.
