Anthropic Launches Claude Duet, Proactive AI Agent to Challenge Muse and Dots
SentiSense · Published · Updated
Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent built on Opus 5.5 that runs in its own cloud virtual machine, sends a morning brief, checks connected apps through the day and handles larger tasks in the background. It is a waitlisted research preview for Pro and Max subscribers in the US, at no extra charge but counting against plan usage limits. It enters the same category as Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots, which launched weeks earlier.
Anthropic unveiled Claude Duet on Oct. 21, a proactive AI agent that keeps working after the user closes the app, checks connected apps through the day and messages only when something needs attention. It launches as a research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, with access granted in waves from a waitlist. There is no extra charge, but Duet's work, including background tasks, counts toward existing plan usage limits. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet.
Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and is aimed at professionals and small-business owners with more on their plates than they can track. Each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across linked apps, and it can take on larger jobs such as scheduling meetings, building dashboards, producing financial or sales forecasts, prototyping and creating web apps. It works inside its own cloud-based virtual machine with its own browser and asks permission before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting anything. Anthropic's product page says it works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, and Duet is available as a standalone iOS and Android app and on the web at claude.ai.
The launch puts Anthropic directly against two larger rivals in the same category: META's Muse and OpenAI's Dots, which launched a few weeks earlier. Like those agents, Duet runs in its own virtual machine, so the competition is less about architecture than about model quality, integrations and how much proactive work users will trust an agent to do. On Meta's Oct. 21 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg said more than 10 million people in the U.S. and Canada have set up Muse accounts, a benchmark Duet will be measured against once it leaves the waitlist.
For investors, Duet matters mainly as a signal of where Anthropic is taking its consumer and prosumer business ahead of a possible listing, and as competitive pressure on Meta's and OpenAI's agent products. The things to watch are how quickly Anthropic opens the waitlist, whether Duet's background usage pushes subscribers to higher-priced plans, and whether Team and Enterprise access follows.
