Anthropic on October 6 expanded its Claude Startups program, offering eligible startups a free year of Claude Team and a one-time $1,000 API credit, and put Claude for Google Workspace into public beta on all paid Claude plans as a sidebar add-on. Separately, it is asking select users to opt in to voice-data training, and reports this week resurfaced a previously disclosed $518 billion in compute commitments over roughly a decade.

Anthropic on October 6 expanded its Claude Startups program, offering eligible startups a free year of Claude Team, its paid plan for groups, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit. CNBC described the move as the latest push to deepen Anthropic's ties to founders and fast-growing companies. Per Anthropic's own post, the package also includes up to $45,000 in partner-tool discounts, and companies qualify if they were founded within the last 5 years or funded within the last 2 years. Quartz reported that the program launched in May, so this is an expansion of an existing offer rather than a new one.

The same day, Anthropic said Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans. According to Anthropic's post, it is an add-on that runs in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, not a feature built by Google. In Docs it can read documents and selected text and either edit in place or propose suggestions; in Sheets it works with formulas, pivot tables and charts; in Slides it builds slides using existing layouts and themes. Edits default to an "Ask before edits" mode.

On data, Anthropic is asking select Claude users to allow it to train on their voice conversations. The setting is opt-in and off by default, can be withdrawn with voice data deleted in settings, and is independent of the text-chat training setting.

Separately, a $518 billion figure has circulated this week. It describes the company's cloud and computing commitments over roughly the next 10 years, drawn from its IPO prospectus. Reuters reported the details around late September from a confidential draft filing, and Implicator.ai's summary of that reporting said about 80% of the total is non-cancellable or payable regardless of usage. It is previously disclosed commitments, not a new plan announced this week.

What to watch: how many startups join the program, whether the Workspace add-on moves beyond beta, how many users opt in to voice training, and what the public version of the IPO filing eventually shows.
