Anthropic Unveils Cost-Efficient AI Model Claude Opus 5

Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5, its latest AI model, positioning it as a cost-efficient alternative that approaches the capability of the pricier Fable 5. The company says the new model delivers comparable performance at roughly half the price of the flagship tier, and it gives users a toggle to prioritize either cost or capability .

The launch matters for enterprises weighing AI adoption, where the cost of running frontier models has been a major barrier. By pricing Opus 5 for everyday production workloads, Anthropic aims to widen access and pull more of the developer market onto its stack.

Anthropic priced Opus 5 at about $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, half of Fable 5's $10 and $50 and in line with the prior Opus 4.8 . The model becomes the default on the top Claude Max subscription and leads the Claude Pro tier, and Anthropic says it set new highs on coding and knowledge-work benchmarks including Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA, though it still trails Mythos 5 on cybersecurity tasks. Early-access customers reported concrete efficiency gains: legal-AI firm Harvey said Opus 5 matched Opus 4.8's top-quality output while cutting average token usage by about 26%.
