Apple Closes Above $5 Trillion, Becomes Second Company to Reach Milestone

AAPL closed at $342.96 on October 14, a market capitalization of $5.005 trillion, the first time it has finished a session above $5 trillion. MacRumors and 9to5Mac report it as the second company to do so after Nvidia, and the gain came on a day most large tech stocks fell.
AAPL closed the October 14, 2026 session at $342.96, up 0.5% on the Nasdaq, for a market capitalization of $5.005 trillion. That made Apple the second company to close above $5 trillion, after Nvidia. The milestone was a first at the closing bell: according to The Wall Street Journal, Apple had topped $5 trillion intraday six times before, but had never stayed above it through a close. AppleInsider credited strong iPhone demand for the move.
The context matters. Apple crossed $5 trillion on July 28, 2026, then slipped back to a little over $4 trillion before recovering. Nvidia, which Apple briefly passed as the most valuable company in July, has since retaken the top spot with a market cap of $5.33 trillion. The new valuation also arrives just over a month after John Ternus took over from Tim Cook as chief executive, and 9to5Mac notes the stock has risen roughly 5% since he started on September 1.
The gain was modest but came against the grain. Most of the tech sector finished in the red that day, with Oracle down 8.83%, Meta down 3.27%, NVDA down 3.16%, and MSFT down 1.8%. Intraday, Apple reached $347.07, about 0.31% below its record high of $348.15.
Investors may watch two things next. iPhone Duo pre-orders open two days after the close, and Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on November 2, which should show how the company has handled rising component costs and its recent hardware price increases. A close this narrow, only slightly above the $5 trillion line, could slip back under with a small move in the shares.
