Apple Integrates Alibaba's AI Model with Macs in China

AAPL has published guidance showing Mac users in mainland China how to connect Alibaba's Qwen models to Siri and Writing Tools, extending a China-specific Apple Intelligence arrangement that cleared regulatory approval in July. The extension requires macOS 26.6 or later, and users must opt in and sign in to a Qwen account; Apple's documentation states Alibaba may not use the resulting data to train its models.

The commercial logic is regulatory rather than technical. Apple cannot ship its own cloud-based Apple Intelligence features in China without a domestic model partner, and Alibaba's Qwen family is one of the few approved options at the required scale. Users who opt in get more detailed Siri responses, including analysis of photos and documents.

The competitive stakes sit in the AI PC segment, where Apple has been losing share to domestic manufacturers such as Lenovo that have shipped locally developed AI features for longer. Extending the partnership from iPhone to Mac closes part of that feature gap in Apple's second-largest market, though it also deepens a dependency on a partner that competes with Apple across services.
