AAPL's plan for a glass-centric, 20th-anniversary iPhone redesign appears to remain on track for a 2027 launch, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, despite a report from Jefferies analyst Edison Lee claiming the project had been canceled over poor production yield.
The conflicting reports rattled investors partly because the redesign was seen as a signature early product for incoming CEO John Ternus, who takes over September 1; Apple shares dipped after the cancellation report threatened to dash expectations for a flashy launch under new leadership.
Gurman's reporting describes the redesign, internally known as V73 and V74, as using glass on both the front and back that curves into the sides around a thin metal band, a departure from Apple's current flat-glass, aluminum-band designs .
