Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo Sells Out in Minutes as U.S. Ship Dates Slip to January 25

Pre-orders for Apple's first foldable iPhone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, opened at 5 a.m. Pacific on Friday, October 16, and the device sold out within minutes. Buyers at the front of the line keep the October 23 launch date, but within about 30 minutes Apple's U.S. online store showed January 25, 2027 for every configuration. Units are reselling on eBay for up to $4,999, and Apple has not said how many were available.

Apple's first foldable iPhone sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening at 5 a.m. Pacific (8 a.m. Eastern) on Friday, October 16. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. The earliest buyers were promised delivery on the October 23 launch day, but within about 30 minutes Apple's U.S. online store was showing a shipping estimate of January 25 for every configuration, a date in 2027. Reported estimates moved in steps along the way, first to November 16 and then November 23, and one first-hand checkout landed at November 9 to 16.

Apple has not disclosed how many units were available in the first pre-order window, so the sellout speaks to demand relative to launch supply rather than to total demand. Counterpoint Research expects about 6 million Duo units this year. The gray market moved immediately: Cult of Mac counted at least four units sold on eBay for $4,999 and dozens more at $3,000 and up, including a 2TB model that costs $3,199 at Apple and sold for $4,999.99. Carriers are also competing for buyers, with AT&T advertising up to $1,200 in bill credits with an eligible trade-in.

The stock reaction has been modest. AAPL rose about 2% in premarket trading, was up about half a percent by mid-morning, and was up about 0.3% at $343.06 by 1:14 p.m. ET on SentiSense's 15-minute delayed quote. Not every read is bullish: UBS, which rates the stock Neutral with a $296 target, said iPhone 18 Pro wait times were running about 4 days shorter than a year ago and that the trends indicate limited upside to sales estimates.

What to watch next is whether Apple can shorten the January backlog before the holidays and whether retail stores have Duo inventory on October 23. MacRumors expects inventory to be very tight at launch, and Apple's next earnings call is the first scheduled chance for management to address Duo supply.
