Apple CEO John Ternus Weighs Faster, Year-Round Launches and a Leaner Organization, Bloomberg Reports

Bloomberg reported on Sept 29 that AAPL CEO John Ternus, in the role since Sept 1, wants Apple to introduce products more quickly and be more experimental, while trimming management. Hardware engineering dismissed about half a dozen directors, small layoffs hit Siri, Vision Pro and AI software, and Apple considered then shelved a plan to replace about 5,000 AppleCare support jobs with AI.
John Ternus, who became Apple (AAPL) CEO on Sept 1 with Tim Cook moving to executive chairman, wants the company to broaden its device range and create a leaner organization with a greater focus on engineering, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on Tuesday, Sept 29. Ternus has indicated Apple must introduce products more quickly and become more experimental, and the company is considering releasing new devices throughout the year rather than concentrating launches in its spring and fall cycles. The report says such changes could take years to show up.
The leaner push is already visible. Over the past two weeks, hardware engineering dismissed several engineering program managers and roughly half a dozen directors, who were given weeks to find other roles at Apple or face layoffs later this year. Small layoffs have also hit Siri, Vision Pro, AI software and a few Fitness+ roles, and 2027 budget planning reportedly includes smaller budget increases, flat staffing and lower marketing spend. Apple also considered eliminating approximately 5,000 AppleCare support positions and replacing them with AI, but has put those plans on hold indefinitely. Apple has not commented publicly.
For investors, the report is an early read on Ternus's priorities: faster product cadence and cost discipline rather than a strategy break. Analysts have separately flagged memory costs and services trends as margin pressures, which gives the cost push a clear motive. What to watch: whether Apple's product calendar shifts in the coming quarters, any disclosed restructuring charges, and operating expense guidance at the next earnings report.
