Bezos and UK Government Back CuspAI in $450M Raise for New Material Discovery

Jeff Bezos and the UK government invested $450 million in CuspAI, a startup seeking to discover new materials. CuspAI is part of a new wave of companies using AI to solve challenges in the physical world. The investment aims to boost the startup's AI-driven materials discovery efforts.

Cambridge, UK-based CuspAI has raised $450 million (about £338 million) in a round that values the two-year-old startup at roughly $2.6 billion, with Jeff Bezos' personal investment vehicle Bezos Expeditions and the UK government's Sovereign AI Fund both joining as backers . The round was co-led by venture firms Kleiner Perkins and NEA; the Sovereign AI Fund, which typically writes checks of just £5 million to £10 million, said the deal fits its mandate to back domestic, deep-technical UK AI companies, making its stake financially small but strategically notable.

Founded in 2024, CuspAI uses generative AI to simulate how untested materials would behave, letting researchers narrow an enormous field of candidate compounds before committing to lab testing. Customers specify the properties they need, such as a semiconductor material with particular electrical characteristics or a compound that captures carbon more efficiently, and CuspAI's models propose candidates, aiming to compress a process that traditionally takes years into months.

Alongside the raise, CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of more than 45 companies including chipmaker NVDA and social media firm META, aimed at pooling the computing resources needed to run materials-discovery software at scale. The company is targeting materials for semiconductors, clean energy and advanced manufacturing, industries where new material breakthroughs can otherwise take a decade or longer using conventional trial-and-error methods.

The UK government's involvement, however small in dollar terms, signals a broader push to keep AI-native deep tech anchored in Britain rather than losing it to US or Chinese capital, a theme investors may see repeated as more Sovereign AI Fund deals surface. Worth watching is whether CuspAI's Nvidia and Meta partnerships translate into commercially deployed materials, and whether the AI Materials Foundry's 45-plus member coalition can coordinate compute access without the same GPU bottlenecks straining consumer AI products elsewhere.
