Ciena jumps 14% as Marvell's 60-70% optical growth forecast lifts the group

Ciena shares rose 14.3% to close at $445.37 on Oct 6, a sympathy move after peer Marvell Technology projected 60 to 70 percent optical interconnect industry growth to about $65 billion through 2030 at its Investor Day. 24/7 Wall St. put the gain at roughly $8 billion of market value on a $62.9 billion market cap, all within the same session.

Shares of Ciena (CIEN) rallied on Tuesday, Oct 6, gaining 14.3% to close at $445.37. The catalyst was not a Ciena announcement. At its Investor Day, peer Marvell Technology (MRVL) said it expects the optical interconnect industry to grow by 60 to 70 percent to about $65 billion through 2030, according to Insider Monkey's report on the move.

The context matters for how to read the jump. Insider Monkey notes that Marvell's figures were markedly higher than Ciena's own 30 percent growth outlook for its business by 2029. The same report points to Jim Cramer saying on Mad Money that Ciena is a very good stock, and to existing analyst coverage: Bernstein gave Ciena an Outperform rating and a $440 price target late last month, and Evercore maintained Outperform with a $550 target. None of the sources read describe a new analyst upgrade on Oct 6. A 24/7 Wall St. roundup also showed AI infrastructure names leading the day's gainers while the S&P 500 fell 0.54%.

The market-value figures in headlines overlap rather than add up. A 24/7 Wall St. card put the 13.22% move to $443.84 at roughly $8 billion of market value on a $62.9 billion optical networking name in a single session, and another card from the same outlet cited about $6 billion in a single session. Those look like snapshots of the same Oct 6 session, not a $6 billion gain followed by an $8 billion after-hours gain, and the after-hours print is close to the regular-session close.

What to watch: Bernstein acknowledged near-term supply constraints, naming ceramic packaging, pump lasers and memory, while expecting those to improve and support stronger growth beyond 2027. Evercore's $550 target represents 23.5 percent upside from Tuesday's close and rests on more than $25 in earnings per share at a 20x multiple. Marvell's forecast covers the industry, so it does not by itself show how much Ciena would capture, and Ciena has not raised its own 30 percent outlook in the reporting reviewed.
