Citi downgraded Adobe to Sell from Neutral and cut its price target to $207 from $250, warning of a "rising risk of a hard reset" to fiscal 2027 growth as incoming CEO Anil Chakravarthy takes over on Dec. 1 amid CFO and Digital Media leadership vacancies. Citi downgraded Adobe (ADBE) to Sell from Neutral on Wednesday and cut its price target to $207 from $250, warning of a "rising risk of a hard reset" to growth expectations. The bank sees downside risk to consensus estimates into fiscal 2027 as a leadership transition coincides with mounting competitive and macro pressure on Adobe's Creative business.
The timing is the crux of the call. Incoming CEO Anil Chakravarthy takes over on Dec. 1 "amid key leadership vacancies," including the CFO and the head of Digital Media, and Citi expects a weaker fiscal 2027 outlook when Adobe reports fourth-quarter results in early December. Citi expects Adobe to lean on top-of-funnel growth through AI and Firefly rather than Creative Cloud price increases, estimating the user-growth push could add 200 basis points of pressure to fiscal 2027 annual recurring revenue (ARR) growth, with a further 50 basis point pricing headwind.
The numbers behind it are sizable. Citi cut its net new ARR estimates for fiscal 2027 and 2028 by roughly $470 million and $500 million, to $1.5 billion and $1.35 billion, taking total ARR growth to 5.3% and 4.5%, which it says is 200 to 300 basis points below Street estimates. It also trimmed its fiscal 2027 non-GAAP gross margin estimate by 70 basis points to reflect unmonetized AI inference costs.
The stock shrugged it off. Adobe shares fell more than 2% in premarket trading, but per SentiSense price data they closed 1.0% higher at $248.48 on a strong day for the broader market, which Barron's framed as another downgrade failing to shake the stock before earnings. Points to watch are the fiscal 2027 outlook in December and whether Adobe fills its CFO and Digital Media roles before then. Citi itself notes a reset would also give the new CEO time to rebuild leadership and set a more achievable base.
