Cloudflare & OpenAI Collaborate on AI Search Pilot

Cloudflare has launched a research pilot with OpenAI to develop AI-driven search capabilities. The collaboration aims to enhance search indexing and improve online content discovery. The partnership highlights Cloudflare's commitment to AI innovation and OpenAI's advanced technology.

NET and OpenAI announced a first-of-its-kind research pilot on July 8, 2026 to explore how insights from websites across Cloudflare's global network can help AI search engines discover and index relevant web content more effectively.

The pilot will draw on Cloudflare's vantage point, its network sits in front of more than 20% of the web, to feed real-time content-freshness, traffic-quality, and page-change signals into OpenAI's crawling and indexing systems. The goal is to improve the accuracy and timeliness of answers served through ChatGPT search. OpenAI VP of Research Nick Ryder said the collaboration would test "whether network-level insights can help us discover content more efficiently."

Neither company disclosed a timeline or financial terms, and the tie-up is explicitly framed as a research pilot rather than a commercial agreement. For Cloudflare, deeper AI-search integration adds a strategic wedge into the broader shift toward AI-driven web discovery, an area increasingly relevant to its content-delivery and bot-management businesses.
