CSX Beats Q3 Estimates on 5% Volume Growth and Record Intermodal, Targets 350bp-Plus Margin Expansion
SentiSense · Published · Updated
CSX reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $4.02 billion, up 12%, and EPS of $0.57, ahead of the $0.53 consensus and $3.95 billion revenue estimate. Volume rose 5%, intermodal volume hit a record, non-fuel costs fell 3% and operating margin reached 39.1%. Management said it expects full-year operating margin expansion of more than 350 basis points and free cash flow growth above 80%; shares rose about 4% after hours.
CSX reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $4.02 billion after the close on Oct. 21, up 12% from $3,587 million a year earlier and above the $3.95 billion consensus. EPS of $0.57 beat the $0.53 analyst estimate by $0.04. Against last year's adjusted result, EPS rose 30%; on a GAAP basis the increase was 54%, from $0.37, because the third quarter of 2025 carried a $164 million goodwill impairment on Quality Carriers.
Volume and costs drove the quarter. Total volume rose 5% while non-fuel costs fell 3%, and intermodal volume grew 7% to an all-time record, lifting intermodal revenue 20% to $634 million. Operating margin reached 39.1%, an improvement of about 420 basis points on the adjusted basis management uses (880 basis points on a GAAP basis, given last year's impairment). That is a strong quarter for CSX but not a record margin: the railroad ran operating ratios in the high 50s in 2018 and 2019.
On the call, management said it is confident CSX will achieve full-year operating margin expansion of more than 350 basis points, and it projects full-year free cash flow growth of more than 80%. Fuel expense rose to $451 million from $281 million, so part of the revenue gain reflects fuel surcharge pass-through rather than pure pricing.
Shares rose 4.03% in after-hours trading on Oct. 21 to $50.35, after closing the regular session at $48.40. Coming into the report the stock was down about 9% over three months but up about 35% over twelve months. The watch points are whether volume growth holds as trucking capacity loosens, whether cost cuts continue alongside higher traffic, and delivery on the margin and cash-flow targets.
