DoorDash to Pay $131.5 Million Settlement, Sparking Market and Labor Reactions

DASH agreed to pay $131.5 million to resolve a New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection case over underpaid delivery workers, the largest food delivery worker settlement in city history. More than $115 million goes directly to over 260,000 workers and about $16 million covers civil penalties and costs. The city said DoorDash failed to pay some workers for completed work, paid others late, and excluded trip time and on-call time from compensable hours between April 2022 and June 2026, across 152 million payment transactions.

The remedy is punitive by design: underpaid workers receive roughly double what they were owed, and DoorDash must submit payment data to the city for three years, with payments beginning in late October. Mayor Zohran Mamdani cast the case as a stand against "corporate greed". DoorDash said "we screwed up" but attributed the errors to technical bugs and complicated delivery situations such as cancelled orders and trips crossing city limits. The New York Post disputed the city's framing, arguing the money "was not stolen" from workers as the mayor suggested.

The settlement, announced September 22, is small against DoorDash's scale but sets a benchmark: it dwarfs the city's prior deals of $5 million with Uber Eats and $875,000 with HungryPanda. Some institutional holders have trimmed positions, including Engineers Gate Manager, though such filings reflect quarter-old holdings.
