ETN reported record third-quarter sales of $8.9 billion on Tuesday, up 28% from a year earlier, with 19% organic growth and about 8 points from acquisitions. Adjusted EPS came in at $3.68 against a consensus estimate of $3.54, a $0.14 beat, while revenue of roughly $8.95 billion topped forecasts near $8.5 billion. The order book is the headline for the AI power trade. Backlog in the combined Electrical sector rose 46% year over year to a record above $20 billion, with Electrical Americas up 33% and Electrical Global up 121%; Aerospace backlog also grew 33%. Electrical Americas sales rose 22% organically with a 29.8% operating margin, and total segment margin reached a record 25.3%. Management lifted full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $13.70-$13.80 from $13.40-$13.60 and raised organic growth guidance to 13-15% from 11-13%.
The gap between adjusted and reported profit is the main caveat. GAAP EPS rose only 6.9% to $2.77, because net interest expense nearly tripled to $198 million and acquired-intangible amortization more than doubled after recent deals. Barron's argued that even rock-solid results may not be enough to ease broader worries about AI-driven capital spending.
What to watch: whether fourth-quarter organic growth lands in the guided 13-15% range, down from 19% this quarter, how quickly the record Electrical backlog converts to sales, and whether data center demand holds up as investors reassess AI infrastructure spending.
