Epic Games Raises V-Bucks Price to 'Help Pay the Bills'
Epic Games has announced it will increase the price of V-Bucks, the in-game currency for Fortnite, in an effort to offset costs. The decision has been met with negative reactions from gamers, who are unhappy about the change.
Epic Games announced it will raise the price of V-Bucks, Fortnite's in-game currency, effective March 19 when the next season begins. The company cited rising operational costs, stating that "the cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot" and the increase is needed to "help pay the bills". The changes reduce the amount of V-Bucks in each bundle — for example, the $8.99 pack drops from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks, and the $22.99 pack from 2,800 to 2,400.
The Battle Pass will also be affected, now costing 800 V-Bucks and awarding 800 V-Bucks upon completion, down from the previous 1,000. Fortnite Crew subscribers will similarly receive 800 V-Bucks per month instead of 1,000. To soften the blow, Epic is offering 20% back on purchases through its Epic Rewards program across Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League.
The move has drawn backlash from the gaming community, with many players expressing frustration over getting less value for the same price. With Fortnite's massive player base of roughly 250 million monthly active users, even a modest churn rate could meaningfully impact Epic's microtransaction revenue. Investors should watch whether the price hike drives higher average revenue per user or accelerates player attrition to competing battle royale titles.
