European Shares Drift on Mideast Risk and Fed Minutes as Moderna and Merck Gap Up on Vaccine Data

European equity markets were largely flat or muted on Tuesday as investors weighed Middle East risks and awaited Federal Reserve minutes, with energy stocks providing modest gains. At the same time, pre‑market trading saw several stocks gap up, driven by the same geopolitical backdrop, notably Moderna, Merck, Estée Lauder and Kingfisher. The mixed signals underscore the market's sensitivity to both geopolitical and policy cues.

European equity markets opened with little direction on Wednesday as traders weighed escalating Iran-United States tensions against the imminent release of Federal Reserve minutes. Energy was the only sector providing a notable lift, consistent with a risk-off tone in which crude strength offsets weakness elsewhere.

The Fed minutes are the scheduled catalyst. With the market still uncertain on the path of policy into year-end, the language on inflation persistence and on the conditions for a pause is what will move rate expectations, and European indices have been trading as a derivative of those expectations rather than on domestic fundamentals.

U.S. pre-market activity told a different story, and the drivers were company-specific rather than geopolitical. MRNA and MRK gapped higher on their Phase 3 personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine readout announced the same morning, not on Middle East developments . Estee Lauder and Kingfisher also traded up pre-market on their own news flow. Grouping these moves under a single geopolitical explanation would misread them.

The useful takeaway is that the macro tape and the single-stock tape are currently decoupled. Index-level direction is hostage to the Fed and to Iran headlines, while individual names are still repricing on fundamentals. Traders will watch the minutes for the rate signal and the Gulf for escalation, but should attribute large single-name gaps to company events before assuming a macro cause.
