ExxonMobil Flags $4.5 Billion Q3 Lift From Refining Margins, Partly Offset by Timing Effects

SentiSense · Published · Updated

In an 8-K filed October 16, ExxonMobil estimated that higher Energy Products margins would add about $4.5 billion to third-quarter earnings versus the second quarter, while lower liquids prices would subtract $1.3 billion. The filing also shows an estimated $2.5 billion negative timing effect, so the net gain should be smaller than the margin line alone suggests. Full results are due October 30.

XOM gave investors an early read on its third quarter in an 8-K filed on October 16, estimating that the change in Energy Products margins would add $4.5 billion to earnings compared with the second quarter (SEC filing). Coverage attributed the jump in refining margins to the Iran war, which has restricted energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz, and to Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries; Exxon said the conflict did not disrupt its own volumes in the quarter.

Other lines in the filing pull the other way. Lower liquids prices are estimated to cut earnings by $1.3 billion as the average Brent price fell about 5.6% over the quarter, chemical product margins subtract $0.6 billion, and the sale of some upstream assets adds $0.7 billion. The filing also shows estimated timing effects of negative $2.5 billion, mostly in Energy Products, which Exxon says are expected to unwind in later periods. That offset is easy to miss: the write-up in does not mention it.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Phillip Jungwirth said the filing points to adjusted refining net income of $8.5 billion, more than double the prior quarter's level. For reference, Exxon earned $14.5 billion in the second quarter and returned more than $9 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. The stock traded at $179 on October 16, its 52-week high.

Exxon reports full third-quarter results on Friday, October 30. The questions for that print are how much of the margin gain survives the timing effects, and whether refining spreads hold into the fourth quarter if Middle East supply constraints ease.
