Fed Hawkish Remarks Ripple Through Precious Metals and Satellite Stocks, Triggering Broad Market Pullback

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole speech pushed gold and silver prices lower, causing SSR Mining shares to fall 4.4%. AST SpaceMobile tumbled 15.5% after the same remarks, despite a surge in Q2 revenue, as higher rates threaten its debt‑heavy satellite buildout. The broader market also slipped, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq edging lower amid rising Treasury yields.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, signalling that rate cuts are unlikely in 2026 and that further hikes remain on the table. U.S. equities reversed early gains on the remarks, with the S&P 500 closing down 0.13% and the Nasdaq off 0.30%, the two-year Treasury yield jumping and September rate-hike odds moving to roughly 50% .

Precious-metal equities took the first hit. Gold and silver prices fell after the commentary and SSRM declined 4.41% on Friday, as capital rotated toward higher-yielding assets such as bonds . Miners have no coupon to offer against a rising real rate, which is why they tend to move before the broader index does on a hawkish surprise.

The sharper move was in capital-intensive growth. ASTS fell 15.5% over the week after Warsh signalled inflation is the Fed's top priority. AST SpaceMobile funds much of its satellite constellation build-out with borrowed money, so a higher-for-longer path raises the cost of the capital the business plan depends on. The rate sensitivity overwhelmed an otherwise striking top line: second-quarter revenue rose to $31.5 million from $1.2 million a year earlier, while net losses widened to $230.9 million .

The pairing is the point. One hawkish speech repriced a gold miner and a pre-profit satellite operator on the same day through two different channels, the opportunity cost of holding metal and the discount rate applied to distant cash flows. Treasury yields and the next round of Fed communication are the variables to watch, since a sustained move higher would keep pressure on exactly these rate-sensitive corners rather than on the index as a whole.
