FedEx Launches Same-Day Delivery Options to Compete with Amazon and Walmart

FedEx introduced same-day delivery options to counter Amazon and Walmart's services.

FedEx announced the launch of FedEx SameDay Local on March 24, a new service offering retailers two-hour and end-of-day delivery windows to compete directly with AMZN and WMT in the fast-growing same-day delivery market. The service, built in partnership with last-mile delivery company OneRail, connects retailers to a national network of more than 1,000 delivery providers using AI-driven orchestration that automatically matches orders to the appropriate vehicle or driver.

The rollout comes just days after Amazon announced one-hour delivery for Prime members in select markets for $10, intensifying the race for speed in e-commerce logistics. FDX is positioning SameDay Local as a tool for small and mid-size retailers who lack the infrastructure to compete with Amazon's fulfillment network, giving them control over whether to pass shipping costs to shoppers or build them into merchandise pricing. Customers will receive predictive ETAs and proof-of-delivery tracking from pickup to drop-off.

For FDX, the OneRail partnership lowers implementation risk by leveraging existing last-mile tech rather than building it in-house, enabling quick scale in targeted local markets. FDX shares traded around $354 on March 25, well below their 12-month high of $392.86, suggesting the market may not yet be pricing in the growth potential of this new revenue stream. Investors should watch initial retailer adoption rates and whether the service can meaningfully narrow Amazon's same-day delivery moat.
