Google Launches AI Game Builder Playground With Unity; Early Unity Gain and Roblox Drop Fade

SentiSense · Published · Updated

Google launched Playground on Oct 7, an experimental browser platform that builds playable games from text prompts, free for US users 18 and older, alongside a strategic partnership with Unity on a more advanced creation tool, Unity Spark, due in closed beta later this year. Unity rose 4% to $46.57 and Roblox fell 4% to $43.87 in early trading, but both moves had largely faded by late morning.

Google, part of GOOGL, announced Playground, a browser-based platform for making custom games from AI prompts, available now in the US to users 18 and older at playground.google. It is free to use, with higher weekly token limits for Google One subscribers, and runs on Google's existing Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria models paired with a custom harness, a Google spokesperson told The Verge. Finished games can be shared by link or published to a community gallery, with leaderboards and multiplayer in select genres.

The launch comes with a strategic partnership with U. Google and Unity will introduce Unity Spark, a new product built on the Unity runtime that keeps the prompt-driven interface while adding professional-level mechanics and high-fidelity 3D, and games made with it will be shareable on Playground. The Verge reports a closed beta is scheduled for later this year, with a waitlist open now. Neither company disclosed financial terms.

Early trading reacted quickly. As of 9:11am ET, Unity was up 4% to $46.57 and RBLX was down 4% to $43.87, as the announcement targets the user-built game market at the heart of Roblox's business, while TTWO was down 0.3% to $201.90. The moves did not hold: by late morning Unity traded at $44.79, down 0.4%, and Roblox at $45.52, down 0.1%.

Playground enters a crowded field. The Verge notes Meta recently said it will let users build games with AI for its Horizon platform, and Roblox already lets users make games with AI through a Build feature in public alpha testing. Google calls Playground an early experiment, and Unity Spark has not launched yet, so adoption of the Spark beta and any Unity disclosure of revenue tied to the partnership are the next signals to watch.
