For Fervo the contract is commercial validation rather than a research milestone. Enhanced geothermal systems use drilling techniques borrowed from shale to create reservoirs where conventional geothermal would not work, which in principle widens the map well beyond the handful of naturally productive sites. A multi-hundred-megawatt offtake from a hyperscaler is the kind of counterparty that makes project financing for the next phase considerably easier.
The optionality is the part to watch. Neither the 1 GW expansion nor the broader 3 GW framework is committed capacity, and both depend on Cape Station delivering on schedule and at the well productivity Fervo projects. Execution risk sits squarely with drilling and interconnection timelines, and 2028 is far enough out that a slip would leave Google sourcing the shortfall elsewhere. No financial terms were disclosed by either party.
More broadly, the agreement is another data point in the repricing of firm clean power for AI infrastructure. If Cape Station performs, the case for corporate geothermal procurement gets easier to make and the competitive set for around-the-clock carbon-free supply widens beyond nuclear. If it slips, the practical answer for data center load stays gas and grid power for longer than the announcements suggest.
