Google Loses Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat as DeepMind Leadership Is Restructured

GOOGL is absorbing the most significant departure from its research organization in years. Jeff Dean, still titled Chief Scientist of Google, is leaving after 27 years alongside Sanjay Ghemawat to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on AI for science . They are joined by fellow senior researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, and Google is backing the new venture rather than opposing it .

The restructure running in parallel is at least as consequential. Demis Hassabis has stepped back from day-to-day leadership of Google DeepMind to become chair of the unit and Chief Scientist of Alphabet . Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, has been promoted to senior vice president of Google DeepMind and now reports directly to Sundar Pichai, taking ownership of Gemini model development and frontier AI research .

Read structurally, this is a consolidation rather than a hollowing out. Research leadership is being pulled closer to the CEO and organized around shipping Gemini, while several of the researchers most associated with open-ended long-horizon work have left to do that work elsewhere. Whether that trade favors Google depends on whether the current competitive phase rewards execution velocity or foundational research.

Shares fell roughly 4% to 5% intraday on the news before a further decline of about 1.3%, closing near $357.75 . Analyst consensus nonetheless held at Strong Buy with an average twelve-month target near $428. What to watch is retention: departures of this seniority frequently precede a second wave, and the Gemini release cadence under Kavukcuoglu is the clearest near-term signal of whether the restructure is working.
