Google Shakes Up AI Leadership, Hassabis Steps Down from DeepMind

Demis Hassabis leaves the CEO role at Google's DeepMind to become Alphabet's chief scientist. Jeff Dean exits Google to start a new initiative with Sanjay Ghemawat. Shares of Alphabet fell 5% following the announcements.

Google has restructured the leadership of its AI organization, and the market read it as a brain drain. Demis Hassabis is stepping out of the Google DeepMind CEO role to become chair of DeepMind and chief scientist across Alphabet, a broader remit focused on long-horizon research and AGI . Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's chief technology officer, becomes senior vice president of DeepMind while retaining his role as Google's chief AI architect. Hassabis continues to lead Alphabet's drug-discovery unit Isomorphic Labs.

The departures are the harder part of the news. Jeff Dean is leaving after 27 years, together with senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, to launch an independent public-benefit corporation called Discovery Loop. Gemini co-lead Oriol Vinyals and veteran researcher Quoc Le are also leaving for the new venture. Google has said the exits are amicable and that it will invest in the startup, but the group represents an unusual concentration of the people who built both Google's infrastructure layer and its frontier model program.

GOOGL fell as much as 5% intraday, briefly erasing close to $190 billion of market value from a $4.61 trillion capitalization, and swung nearly 7% across the session from $381.81 to a low of $355.16. The move is a confidence repricing rather than a cash-flow event: Alphabet's Q2 results were strong, and nothing in the reshuffle changes near-term earnings. What investors are marking down is execution risk on the model roadmap at a moment when Gemini's next major release is seen as slipping and competitive pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic is most acute in coding. The signals to watch are whether further senior researchers follow the Discovery Loop group, and whether Kavukcuoglu's elevation keeps the Gemini release cadence intact.
