Honeywell Q3 beats estimates, lifts 2026 outlook on strong sales and cash flow
SentiSense · Published · Updated
Honeywell reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted EPS of $2.27, up 34% year over year and ahead of analyst consensus, on sales of $5.0 billion with 7% organic growth. Segment margin expanded 370 basis points to 21.3%, free cash flow rose 15% to about $690 million, and backlog reached nearly $19 billion. Management raised its 2026 outlook to 4% to 5% organic growth, adjusted EPS of $8.40 to $8.45 and free cash flow of about $2.1 billion, and reiterated a plan to cut gross debt below $13 billion by year end.
HON delivered its first full quarter as a pure-play automation company with results ahead of expectations. Third-quarter sales were $5.0 billion, up 1% reported and 7% organically, and adjusted EPS rose 34% to $2.27, ahead of analyst consensus; GAAP EPS of $2.40 was down 20% because the prior year included a one-time gain. Organic growth came in above the high end of the targets Honeywell laid out at its June investor day.
Profitability was the standout. Segment margin expanded 370 basis points to 21.3%, which CFO Michal Stepniak attributed to productivity, pricing, volume leverage and faster removal of costs stranded by the aerospace spin-off. Free cash flow rose 15% to about $690 million, a 95% conversion rate, and management expects conversion above 100% in the fourth quarter. Building Automation grew 8% organically, its eighth straight quarter of high-single-digit growth, Process Automation and Technology grew 8%, and Industrial Automation grew 4%.
Demand signals were solid. Backlog ended the quarter at nearly $19 billion, up 7% excluding divestitures, data-center orders more than doubled, and the process automation backlog grew more than 10% on wins in LNG, refining and petrochemicals.
Honeywell raised its 2026 outlook: organic sales growth is now 4% to 5% (from 3% to 4%), adjusted EPS $8.40 to $8.45 (from $8.05 to $8.35), and free cash flow about $2.1 billion, up $100 million from the prior range. It also reiterated a plan to cut gross debt from $18 billion in the second quarter to below $13 billion by year end, with debt reduction the near-term priority and acquisitions considered from 2027.
What to watch: whether fourth-quarter organic growth lands in the guided 5% to 6% range, whether the process automation margin recovers toward about 21.5% as the acquired Catalyst Technologies business integrates, and progress on the debt target that underpins the company's 2029 earnings goal of $12 or more.
