IBM Achieves Quantum Advantage Breakthrough with Partners

IBM and its partners have made significant breakthroughs in quantum computing, exceeding classical computing capabilities. The advancements suggest a potential boost for IBM's earnings by 2029. Quantum computing has become another key area of innovation for the company.

IBM and five research partners said on July 30, 2026 that quantum computers have crossed into what IBM Research director Jay Gambetta called the "quantum advantage era," publishing a set of demonstrations in which quantum systems solved problems classical supercomputers could not reliably replicate. The work ran on IBM's Heron chip in collaboration with the University of Chicago, Japan's RIKEN institute, and quantum software firms Qedma, BlueQubit, and Algorithmiq.

The claims matter because past "quantum advantage" announcements have often been narrow and hard to independently verify. With the University of Chicago, IBM built circuits out of doped Clifford gates, a structured alternative to earlier random-circuit-sampling benchmarks, then used spacetime codes to certify the results. Separately, IBM and Qedma tracked the oscillating magnetization of a 74-qubit Floquet Ising model and found the quantum results stayed consistent even as two classical simulation methods, run on RIKEN's Fugaku supercomputer, disagreed with each other; the team cross-checked its results against RIKEN, BlueQubit, and Quantinuum hardware and posted them to IBM's public Quantum Advantage Tracker.

The announcement follows a rough stretch for IBM shares, which fell 25% on July 14, 2026, the worst single trading day in the company's history, after IBM disclosed that some enterprise customers had delayed capital-spending projects in favor of AI hardware purchases. CEO Arvind Krishna said on July 30 that about 40% of those delayed deals had already closed within three to four weeks, calling it "a deferral, not a destruction." On quantum, Krishna said the technology should have a "measurable impact" on IBM's earnings by 2028 or 2029, and estimated the broader quantum computing market could be worth a trillion dollars by the end of the 2030s.

For now, this reads as a research milestone rather than a near-term revenue driver: IBM's own CEO puts commercial impact roughly two to three years out. Investors should watch whether IBM converts the science into paying customers before 2028, including through the $1 billion quantum chip foundry it agreed to build with the U.S. Commerce Department in May 2026, and whether China's Origin Quantum, which exported quantum computing power abroad in 2025 and launched its 180-qubit Wukong-180 system in 2026, narrows the gap.
