IBM Unveils Bob Updates for Enterprise AI Software Development
IBM has advanced its agentic software development platform Bob with new capabilities, including multi-agent tools and specialized modernization workflows. The updates aim to simplify AI software development, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experience.
IBM has rolled out a major update to Bob, IBM's agentic software development platform, adding multi-agent orchestration, a new cost and usage analytics feature called Bobalytics, and three specialized "premium packages" targeting legacy-system modernization: Java, IBM i, and IBM Z. The new architecture lets Bob run parallel, model-native tool calls and delegate complex work to subagents that isolate context to help control cost, while consolidating the platform from five operating modes down to three: Agent, Plan, and Ask.
The update builds on Bob's global availability launch in April 2026, when IBM said thousands of its own developers were already using the platform to modernize COBOL, RPG, and Java codebases. The new IBM Z package adds enterprise-scale COBOL, PL/I, and assembler analysis with dedicated architect and code modes for mainframe work, while the IBM i package adds native QSYS file-system integration and RPG-to-free-form conversion tools, areas where IBM argues it faces little direct competition from general-purpose coding assistants such as MSFT's GitHub Copilot.
IBM is positioning Bob less as a head-to-head rival to inline coding assistants and more as a full software-development-lifecycle partner, with built-in governance, audit trails, and now cost visibility through Bobalytics, an argument aimed at large enterprises wary of ungoverned AI coding sprawl. New deployment options in Japan and Europe also address data-residency requirements. If the multi-agent and modernization tooling holds up in production, it could reinforce IBM's push to monetize AI inside its consulting and mainframe services business; if it adds complexity without clear ROI, enterprise IT buyers may stick with narrower point tools instead.
