J.B. Hunt Q3 Revenue Jumps 20% and Tops Estimates, but Margin Squeeze Sends Shares Down 4% After Hours

SentiSense · Published · Updated

J.B. Hunt reported third-quarter revenue of $3.68 billion, up 20% and above the $3.567 billion IBES estimate, but operating income rose only 2% to $247.1 million and diluted EPS of $1.82 drew mixed reads against consensus. Higher purchased transportation and driver costs squeezed margins, and the shares fell 4.2% after hours.

JBHT reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $3.68 billion after the close on Oct. 15, up 20% from $3.05 billion a year earlier and ahead of the $3.567 billion IBES estimate. Excluding fuel surcharges, revenue grew 13%. Profit did not keep pace: operating income rose just 2% to $247.1 million and diluted earnings per share were $1.82, up 3% from $1.76.

Whether that EPS figure was a miss depends on whose consensus you use. Reuters reported that profit lagged estimates, and one summary of the LSEG-based coverage put consensus at $1.89, while Investing.com said EPS matched its $1.82 consensus. The margin story is clearer. Operating margin fell to 6.7% from 7.9% a year earlier, Investing.com said, as the company cited higher purchased transportation, professional driver personnel and fuel costs.

The segment detail shows where the pressure sits. Intermodal, the largest unit, grew revenue 20% to $1.83 billion on 8% volume growth, with operating income up 18% to $147.5 million. Dedicated Contract Services grew revenue 11% to $960 million, but its operating income fell 22% to $81.7 million on higher driver personnel expense and group medical claims. Integrated Capacity Solutions swung to a $9.6 million operating profit from a small loss on 57% revenue growth, while Final Mile operating income fell 76% to $1.6 million.

Investors focused on the margins: shares fell 4.2% in after-hours trading despite the revenue beat, reversing a 1.4% gain in the regular session, according to SentiSense market data. What to watch: whether driver and purchased-transportation costs ease enough for revenue growth to reach the bottom line, and whether Dedicated's profit decline is a one-quarter claims spike or a trend. As an early freight bellwether in earnings season, J.B. Hunt's read on intermodal demand may also color expectations for other transport names.
