Stablecoin payments reached $482 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 45% from a year earlier, even as stablecoin supply stalled at about $305 billion, according to Allium data reported by CoinDesk. Mastercard launched its Global Money Platform with BVNK on October 15, offering stablecoin-linked card issuing in more than 130 countries, and Visa moved stablecoin prefunding on Visa Direct into production. Stripe and Coinbase are also building stablecoin card products.

Stablecoin payments reached $482 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 45% from a year earlier, while the number of payments rose 71% to over 1 billion, according to an Allium report covered by CoinDesk. Supply has not kept pace: stablecoins outstanding stood at about $305 billion at the end of September, up just 0.4% this year. Card spending funded by stablecoins reached $3.9 billion through September, ten times a year earlier, but Allium classed only 2.5% of raw stablecoin transfers as end-user activity.

The incumbents are building the rails. MA launched its Global Money Platform on October 15, offering stablecoin-linked card issuing in more than 130 countries, 73 days after closing its $1.8 billion acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK. V moved stablecoin prefunding on Visa Direct from pilot to production, letting businesses fund payouts with USDC or USDT while recipients are paid in local currency, with Inyo Global the first commercial user.

Fintechs are moving too. Stripe is building cards with Plasma that can hold multiple fiat currencies and stablecoins, with card infrastructure in more than 30 countries and plans for over 100 by next year. COIN is working with MQ on stablecoin-backed payment cards, with Coinbase handling custody, conversion and settlement on Base.

The numbers are growing fast from a tiny base: stablecoin card spending was about 0.03% of Visa's payment volume in the second quarter. Watch whether the card networks start disclosing stablecoin volumes, and how issuers prepare for the GENIUS Act's January 2027 effective date.
