Medtronic Beats Q1 Estimates, Raises FY27 Outlook and Commits $700M to Robotics, Shares Jump Up to 9%
Medtronic reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings of $1.45 adjusted EPS and revenue of $9.76 billion, both topping analyst estimates, and lifted its FY27 EPS and organic revenue growth guidance; about half of the 13.7% organic growth figure reflects an extra selling week in its 53-week fiscal year. The company also announced a roughly $700 million distribution partnership with Cornerstone Robotics for its Sentire surgical-robotics system, complementing its existing Hugo platform. The stock jumped in premarket trading, though reports differ on how large and durable the move was.
Medtronic posted a solid first-quarter fiscal 2027 performance, delivering adjusted earnings per share of $1.45, which beat the FactSet consensus of $1.39, and revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing the $9.55 billion estimate . The company reported 13.7% organic revenue growth, prompting it to raise its FY27 adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $5.94-$6.00, above the $5.95 consensus estimate, and to lift its FY27 organic revenue growth outlook to 7.25%-7.75% from 6.75%-7.25%. Roughly half of the reported organic growth came from an extra selling week built into Medtronic's 53-week fiscal year, an estimated $570 million benefit, so the underlying demand trend is solid but not as steep as the headline number alone suggests.
Separately, Medtronic announced a roughly $700 million strategic partnership with Cornerstone Robotics, gaining rights to distribute Cornerstone's Sentire surgical-robotics system in select markets outside the United States. Sentire targets general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic procedures and is positioned as a complement to Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic-assisted surgery platform rather than a cardiac product, giving the company a two-platform robotics lineup. Some market commentary framed the deal as sharpening MDT's competitive position against surgical-robotics leader Intuitive Surgical, though Medtronic's own announcement did not name a competitor and described the move as investing across platforms to match varying surgeon and hospital preferences.
Reaction in the stock was choppy across the day: multiple outlets reported a premarket pop of roughly 5% to 9% following the combined earnings and robotics news, while at least one report and SentiSense's own intraday data showed the gain moderating to a more modest level as the session wore on. Given how much the various snapshots disagree, the safest read is that shares opened sharply higher on the news before paring much of the move.
Looking ahead, investors will watch whether Medtronic's underlying (non-calendar-boosted) organic growth can hold up through the rest of FY27, how quickly Sentire adds to the Hugo platform's global footprint, and whether the raised guidance proves durable as the company navigates competitive and regulatory pressure across its device portfolio.
