Meta AI Exec Leaves, Zuckerberg Acknowledges Mistakes Amid AI Reorganization

A Meta AI executive has left the company due to reorganization efforts. Meta is also launching new AI features on Facebook, including improved search and content creation tools. CEO Zuckerberg has acknowledged mistakes in the AI reorganization process.

META is navigating a significant AI reorganization that has reshaped its workforce and leadership. Emily Dalton Smith, the head of product for Meta's "AI for Work" transformation initiative, is leaving the company after roughly two months in the role. Dalton Smith had been appointed to lead product work on internal AI tooling as part of a company-wide overhaul to center AI agents across Meta's products and workflows. Her departure adds to a broader executive churn tied to the restructuring.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged in an internal memo that the company "made mistakes and will almost certainly make more" during a restructuring that impacted roughly 20% of its global workforce, or approximately 8,000 employees. An additional 7,000 employees were reassigned to AI-related roles. Zuckerberg committed to providing more stability, promised no further company-wide layoffs this year, and announced plans to scale back lopsided manager-to-employee ratios in the AI engineering unit. Meta's chief product officer Chris Cox described the period as "brutal."

Despite the internal turbulence, META is pressing ahead with consumer-facing AI features. Facebook is rolling out an AI Mode that reshapes how users search and create content on the platform, with improvements to AI-powered search and photo editing capabilities. Investors will be watching whether the product momentum from new Facebook AI features offsets the talent disruption and whether Meta can stabilize its AI org fast enough to compete with rivals in the rapidly moving generative AI landscape.
