Meta hires MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead new enterprise AI platform; MongoDB shares drop about 18%

Meta has hired MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead a new enterprise platform that packages its AI models and agents for business customers, a direct push into territory held by ServiceNow, Salesforce and Microsoft. MongoDB named former CEO Dev Ittycheria interim CEO, and its shares fell about 18% in morning trading, with outlets reporting intraday drops of more than 20% as the move unfolded.

META has recruited MDB chief executive CJ Desai to run a newly created enterprise platform aimed at corporate customers. Through the platform Meta plans to sell its full technology stack to businesses, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent and the Muse API. The Wall Street Journal framed the push as Meta seeking a payoff from its AI spending by building a business line around it.

MongoDB moved quickly to fill the gap. Its board named Dev Ittycheria, who led the company for 11 years before Desai succeeded him in November 2025, as interim President and CEO effective immediately, according to MongoDB's announcement. Desai had run MongoDB for less than a year, and before that spent roughly eight years at NOW as president and COO.

The market reaction was severe. Reuters reported MongoDB shares tumbled 18% in morning trading after falling about 20% premarket, while MarketWatch headlined a drop of more than 20% ; the figures vary because they were taken at different points in a fast-moving session. By midday our data showed MDB at $338.06, down 17.6%. Seeking Alpha flagged the announcement as a competitive threat to enterprise software incumbents including NOW, CRM and MSFT.

Two questions now matter. For MongoDB, it is whether the selloff reflects the business or only the leadership vacuum, which makes the company's next earnings report and any permanent CEO search the key tells. For Meta, it is execution: the company has a consumer-scale AI stack but little history selling enterprise software, so early customer wins and pricing will show whether the platform can take share from entrenched vendors.
