Meta Releases First Image Model, Muse Image
Meta has released its first image model, Muse Image, which will be integrated into its AI chatbot and Instagram photo app. This move is part of the company's efforts to attract creators and advertisers to its offerings. Meta's stock has seen a 3% increase following the announcement.
Meta has released Muse Image, the first image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the AI unit led by Alexandr Wang . Originally codenamed Mango, Muse Image follows the April debut of the Muse Spark language model and is now rolling out for free across the Meta AI app and website, WhatsApp direct messages, and Instagram Stories, with Facebook and Messenger integration planned later this year .
The model is built to handle complex, multi-step prompts, blending multiple photos and interpreting detailed instructions involving camera angles, lighting, artistic style, and spatial relationships. Meta is pairing the launch with more than 30 new AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories, and the model's most notable feature lets users generate images of friends or creators based on their public Instagram posts . The release is part of META's broader push to keep users and advertisers engaged on its apps with in-house generative AI tools rather than ceding the category to standalone image generators.
Meta Platforms shares rose roughly 3% following the announcement, with the stock trading at a price-to-operating-cash-flow ratio of about 11.6x, a discount to its five-year average of 13.7x . Basic image generation remains free, while Meta is positioning higher usage volumes behind its paid Meta One subscription, a monetization path investors will be watching as adoption scales. The launch also tests Meta's ability to compete directly with OpenAI, Google, and Midjourney in consumer image generation while managing the privacy and likeness questions raised by letting Muse Image draw on users' public Instagram content.
