MSFT today completed construction of "Fairwater," its first data center on a massive 315-acre campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. Microsoft President Brad Smith declared the facility "the world's most powerful supercomputer" — though the company did not release independent benchmarks or petaflop figures. The campus spans 1.2 million square feet across three buildings, draws more than 400 megawatts of power in its current phase, and is designed to scale to 900 MW when both phases are complete. Total Wisconsin investment reaches approximately $4.7 billion.
The Fairwater facility represents a key node in Microsoft's global AI infrastructure buildout, which the company committed $80 billion to in its fiscal 2026 capital plan. Nearly 550 full-time employees are already on-site. The construction required 46.6 miles of deep foundation piles and 26.5 million pounds of structural steel, underscoring the physical scale of hyperscale AI compute — an often-overlooked contrast to the software-centric narrative around AI investment.
Microsoft's data center ambitions face two converging pressures. First, power: at 400-900 MW, Fairwater competes with industrial-scale electricity consumers, and West Texas and now Wisconsin are both sites where Microsoft is locking in decade-long energy agreements (as in today's Chevron deal). Second, return on capital: the company's AI capex pace has drawn increasing investor scrutiny, with MSFT shares down roughly 8% from their May 2026 highs amid broader tech sector selling.
