Microsoft Unveils AI-Designed Quantum Chip 'Majorana 2' with Improved Reliability

Microsoft MSFT unveiled Majorana 2, its next-generation quantum processor, at Build 2026, saying topological-qubit advances and agentic AI-assisted design improved qubit reliability by roughly 1,000x over the prior generation.

The chip can maintain quantum states for an average of about 20 seconds and is positioned as a step toward a scalable architecture targeting up to one million qubits on a single chip. Microsoft reiterated its goal of commercially useful quantum computing by 2029.

The announcement strengthens MSFT's quantum narrative alongside rivals such as IBM and Alphabet, though the claims carry caveats: independent physicists have challenged Microsoft's topological-qubit results, which rest on an unreviewed preprint. Near-term revenue impact is limited, but the roadmap could matter for Azure's long-run differentiation.
