MicroStrategy holds 845,050 BTC, skips new purchases while repurchasing $176M stock and expands $2B credit program

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, disclosed holdings of 845,050 bitcoin and no purchases during the August 31 to September 7 window. It instead retired 1,810,885 STRC preferred shares for $176.3 million and expanded its digital credit securities program from $1 billion to $2 billion. A 4,603 bitcoin purchase at roughly $80,318 occurred the prior week, not this one.
Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy and still listed as MSTR, disclosed in an 8-K filed September 8 that it now holds 845,050 bitcoin and bought none during the August 31 to September 7 window. It is the pause, not the holdings figure, that is the news: the company's defining behaviour for four years has been to buy on almost every reporting cycle.
Instead of accumulating, Strategy spent the week repurchasing its own securities, retiring 1,810,885 shares of its STRC preferred series for $176.3 million. The security matters. This was the STRC preferred, not common stock and not the STRK or STRF series, and the three are routinely conflated in coverage. Buying back a preferred is a balance-sheet cost-reduction move rather than a signal about the common equity.
The company also expanded its digital credit securities program from $1 billion to $2 billion, which reads as building capacity rather than deploying it. A purchase of 4,603 bitcoin at roughly $80,318 apiece did occur, but in the prior week, not this one, and the sequence is easy to misread.
The combination of no bitcoin purchases, a preferred buyback and a larger credit facility describes a company managing its capital structure rather than adding to the trade. What to watch: whether the pause extends to a second reporting week, whether the expanded credit program is drawn down for bitcoin or for further preferred retirement, and how the premium of the equity to the value of its bitcoin holdings behaves while accumulation is on hold.
