Moderna Adds Former Biogen CFO Michael McDonnell to Board

Moderna has appointed former Biogen CFO Michael McDonnell to its board of directors

Moderna MRNA has appointed Michael McDonnell, the former chief financial officer of BIIB Biogen, to its board of directors effective July 8, 2026.

McDonnell brings more than 35 years of financial leadership and public-company experience. He served as Biogen's executive vice president and CFO from August 2020 through February 2025, and earlier held CFO roles at IQVIA Holdings, Intelsat S.A., MCG Capital Corporation, and EchoStar Communications. He began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, spending 14 years there including four as a partner.

McDonnell will join Moderna's Audit Committee. He currently also serves on the boards of Merit Medical Systems, where he chairs the audit committee, and Baxter International, giving him active oversight experience across medical-device and diversified healthcare companies alongside his new Moderna role. The appointment was reported across additional wire coverage without further incremental detail beyond the company's announcement.

For Moderna, adding a veteran biotech and life-sciences CFO to the board comes as the company manages a post-pandemic transition: COVID-19 vaccine revenue has declined from pandemic-era peaks, and the company is investing in a broader respiratory and oncology pipeline that requires disciplined capital allocation and credible financial governance.

McDonnell's audit-committee experience across multiple public healthcare companies could support Moderna's financial reporting and capital-markets credibility as it works through this transition, though a single board addition does not by itself change near-term revenue or pipeline execution, which remain the primary drivers of the stock.
