Netflix Film Chief Dan Lin Exits Days After 1,000 Layoffs and Bela Bajaria's Departure; Q3 Earnings Due Tonight

SentiSense · Published · Updated

Netflix film chief Dan Lin is leaving the company, the Los Angeles Times and Variety reported on Oct. 19, days after Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs and announced that chief content officer Bela Bajaria would be replaced by former Disney executive Peter Rice. Rice will oversee film until a new head is named, and Netflix reports third-quarter results after the close on Oct. 20.

Dan Lin, who has run Netflix's film division for nearly three years, is leaving the company, the Los Angeles Times and Variety reported on Oct. 19, citing people familiar with the decision. Peter Rice, the former Disney television chairman who becomes Netflix's chief content officer on Oct. 26, will oversee the film team until a new film chief is named. Lin and co-CEO Ted Sarandos issued statements; Netflix did not offer further comment.

The exit caps a week of upheaval. Around Oct. 15 Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs, roughly 6% of staff, mainly in product, technology, legal and HR. On Oct. 16 it announced that Bela Bajaria was departing as chief content officer and that Rice would take over the role. In a memo, Sarandos called the content changes "an opportunity to take our slate to the next level, especially in UCAN". Speculation about possible film successors has circulated in the trade press but has not been confirmed.

The timing puts the restructuring front and centre for tonight's results. NFLX reports third-quarter earnings after the close on Oct. 20, with consensus EPS of $0.82 per SentiSense's earnings calendar. The stock closed at $69.85 on Oct. 19, down 1% on the day and roughly 40% lower over the past year.

What to watch: whether management frames the cuts and leadership changes as a cost reset that lifts margins, how it describes the 2027 film slate under Rice, and whether subscriber and engagement trends give investors reason to look past the turmoil.
