OpenAI Acquires Ona to Power AI Coding Assistant Codex

OpenAI announced on June 11, 2026 that it has agreed to acquire Ona, a cloud platform startup that provides secure, pre-configured environments where AI agents can access tools, systems, and context. Ona's team will join OpenAI's Codex division once the deal closes, though financial terms were not disclosed. Ona evolved from Gitpod, a well-known cloud development environment provider, before repositioning itself around autonomous software-engineering agents. The startup's core offering addresses one of the primary friction points in agentic coding workflows: giving AI systems a reliable, isolated runtime where they can execute code, run tests, and interact with external services without conflicting with one another. OpenAI's Codex, which launched in 2025 as a cloud-based software engineering agent, already runs each task inside its own sandboxed environment, and Ona's infrastructure expertise is expected to deepen that capability for longer-running, more complex assignments.

Codex has grown rapidly, reporting more than 5 million weekly active users as of June 2026, up from 3 million in April. The Ona acquisition is squarely aimed at sustaining that momentum and extending Codex into enterprise production deployments, where reliability and security of the agent runtime are non-negotiable. The competitive backdrop is fierce: MSFT-owned GitHub Copilot is accelerating its own agentic capabilities with a newly launched desktop client and usage-based billing, while Anthropic's Claude Code and Cursor are also drawing developer mindshare away from established tools.

For investors tracking public market read-throughs, MSFT sits at the center of this competition through both GitHub Copilot and its capacity as OpenAI's primary cloud backer and compute partner.
