OpenAI Partners with Amazon to Sell AI to US Agencies

OpenAI will sell AI to US agencies through Amazon's cloud unit, expanding their AI presence and capabilities in the government sector.

OpenAI has signed a partnership with Amazon Web Services to sell AI tools to U.S. government agencies, expanding its footprint in the public sector. Under the deal, AWS's government sales force will market OpenAI's products, including ChatGPT and custom AI models, to federal agencies for both classified and unclassified work. Revenue from government sales will be shared between AMZN's cloud division and OpenAI.

The partnership builds on OpenAI's recent Pentagon contract, announced approximately one month prior, which gave 3 million Defense Department employees access to ChatGPT in a deal expected to generate millions of dollars over 15 months. The AWS arrangement significantly broadens OpenAI's government reach by leveraging Amazon's established public-sector cloud customer base and infrastructure.

For Amazon, the deal strengthens AWS's competitive position in the government cloud market by adding OpenAI's cutting-edge AI capabilities to its service portfolio. The partnership comes as the race for government AI contracts intensifies, with federal agencies increasingly seeking to deploy large language models for productivity and operational efficiency. Specific contract values for the AWS arrangement have not been disclosed.
