OpenAI Plans to Buy Google AI Chips, The Information Reports

OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. Financial terms and other details were not disclosed, and OpenAI declined to comment. OpenAI began renting Google's chips in 2025 and said last week that its frontier models will be available through Google Cloud, so a purchase would deepen an existing tie while adding another supplier alongside Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and Microsoft.
OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. Reuters relayed the report and said it did not disclose financial terms or other details; OpenAI declined to comment and Google did not immediately respond. Other outlets identify the chips as Google's tensor processing units (TPUs), and none names a TPU generation or a volume.
The two companies already trade compute. Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had begun renting Google's chips, and last week OpenAI said its frontier models would be available through Google Cloud. What is new is that the reported plan is a purchase. Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year, and Alphabet's CFO has said only a small share of TPU sales revenue will be recognized this year, with most arriving in 2027.
For OpenAI, it would add another supplier to a long list. In 2025 it announced a plan with NVDA to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of its systems, a 6-gigawatt AMD GPU agreement, a 10-gigawatt custom accelerator collaboration with AVGO, and a commitment to buy an incremental $250 billion of Azure services from MSFT, which gave up its right of first refusal as OpenAI's compute provider.
For GOOGL, it could widen a TPU customer base that includes Anthropic, which Broadcom said in an April 2026 filing would access about 3.5 gigawatts of Google TPU capacity from 2027, and Meta, which Reuters reported in February had signed a multi-year, multibillion-dollar deal to rent TPUs. Watch for confirmation of terms, whether the chips run in Google's cloud or OpenAI's own sites, and any comment when Alphabet reports earnings after the close on Wednesday.
