Plug Power's $134M Cash Buffer Tested as Stock Hits 52‑Week Low
SentiSense · Published · Updated
Plug Power ended the third quarter with about $134 million of unrestricted cash after net cash usage of about $28 million, according to preliminary figures. Shares fell 7.1% on Friday to $1.38, a new 52-week low, after Morgan Stanley cut its target to $1.20 and Susquehanna to $1.75. Plug reports full results on November 9 and holds its Symposium on November 19.
PLUG said in preliminary, unaudited figures released on October 15 that it ended the third quarter with approximately $134 million in cash and cash equivalents, excluding restricted cash, after net cash usage of about $28 million in the quarter. It did not raise money through its at-the-market offering program during the period. Unrestricted cash stood at $161.9 million at the end of June, and the second-quarter burn was about $61 million, so the cash decline has slowed even as the cushion has shrunk.
Analysts were not reassured. Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 from $1.65 and kept an Underweight rating, and Susquehanna cut its target to $1.75 from $2.50 with a Neutral rating, according to ad-hoc-news. The stock hit a 52-week low around $1.40 and closed Friday down 7.1% at $1.38, according to SentiSense data, as broader market weakness added pressure. Ad-hoc-news described the quarterly burn as a record low for the company, a characterization Plug did not make itself.
The two November dates commentators flagged are company events rather than debt deadlines: full third-quarter results on November 9 and Plug's annual global Symposium on November 19. The question for both is whether management can show a path to funding operations without heavy dilution, since a $134 million cushion leaves little room if the burn picks up again. Simply Wall St noted that earnings estimates have risen recently after the reiterated guidance and lower cash use.
What to watch: the audited cash figure and restricted cash balance in the November 9 report, any use of the at-the-market program in the fourth quarter, and financing or partnership announcements around the Symposium.
