Rivian Lands $1 Billion Volkswagen Loan as Record Q3 Deliveries Test the R2 Ramp
SentiSense · Published · Updated
Rivian secured a $1 billion, 10-year non-recourse loan from Volkswagen at a fixed 6.03% rate, with no payment due until October 2028, part of Volkswagen's $5.8 billion joint-venture commitment. It follows record Q3 2026 deliveries of 19,248 vehicles, up 45.8% year over year as the R2 ramps. Profitability is still the open question: the last reported quarter, Q2, showed a $36 million automotive gross loss (about negative 3%) and negative $849 million of free cash flow.
RIVN has secured a $1 billion loan from Volkswagen at a 6.03% interest rate that stays fixed for 10 years, with nothing owed until October 2028. The loan is non-recourse: collateral is limited to Rivian's half of its technology joint venture with Volkswagen, not its plants. It is a draw under the joint-venture deal announced in 2024, in which Volkswagen committed $5.8 billion; about $5.3 billion has now been put in, and the remaining $460 million is due as equity by January 2028.
The financing lands days after Rivian reported its best delivery quarter ever. Q3 2026 deliveries reached 19,248, up 45.8% from 13,201 a year earlier and 58% above Q2, on production of 19,751 at its Normal, Illinois plant. Through September Rivian has delivered 41,807 vehicles and is holding full-year guidance of 65,000 to 70,000, as the new R2 SUV moves through its first full quarter of deliveries.
Margins are what the loan buys time to fix. Q3 financials have not been reported yet; in Q2 2026 Rivian posted a $36 million automotive gross loss, about a negative 3% margin, and negative $849 million of free cash flow, with the R2 launch adding roughly $100 million of extra cost. Consolidated gross profit in Q2 was positive at $179 million, an 11% margin, helped by software and services.
What to watch: Q3 results for whether higher R2 volume lifts automotive gross margin above zero, progress toward the 65,000 to 70,000 delivery target in Q4, and the final $460 million Volkswagen equity payment.
