Robinhood Brings Zero-Fee Crypto Trading to UK Market

Robinhood has launched zero-fee crypto trading in the UK, allowing users to trade over 50 digital assets. The move brings more users and increased competition to the UK crypto market. The news drives up Robinhood's stock price, reflecting its growing presence in the global crypto market.

HOOD has launched zero-fee cryptocurrency trading for UK clients, giving access to more than 50 digital assets on infrastructure from Bitstamp, the exchange it acquired to obtain regulated venue capability. The shares rose on the announcement as investors read the launch as evidence the Bitstamp deal is converting into distribution rather than sitting as an unintegrated asset.

Zero fees at launch is a customer-acquisition posture, not a revenue model. Robinhood's crypto economics have historically come from payment for order flow and spread rather than explicit commission, so "zero-fee" describes the visible price to the user and says nothing about realized take rate. The UK is a deliberate choice of battleground: it is a large retail market where incumbent crypto access has been comparatively expensive and where the FCA's regime gives a licensed operator a defensible position against offshore venues.

The competitive frame extends beyond Robinhood. Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong used the same news cycle to argue for crypto's role in widening global financial access, which is the shared narrative both firms need for international expansion to keep clearing regulators. What to watch is whether UK funded accounts and crypto notional volumes show up in the next quarterly disclosure. Without that, a fee-free launch is a cost line, not yet a growth line.
