Roblox Opens Up Text-Prompt Game Creation, Standalone Apps and Browser Play at RDC 2026

At its developer conference in San Jose on September 10 to 12, Roblox showed a text-prompt AI creation tool and a revenue wallet, and said creators will be able to ship their games as standalone applications. Browser play is slated for year-end 2026 with offline single-player modes staged for mid-2027. The company also opened its 20th-anniversary event, The Hunt: Roblox 20, which starts September 17.

RBLX used its developer conference in San Jose, held September 10 to 12, to argue that it is becoming less a game and more a platform. The centerpiece was an AI creation tool that builds playable scenes from typed prompts such as "make me a theme park with...", paired with a revenue wallet for creators. Note the input method: the tool takes text prompts, not spoken commands, despite some coverage framing it as voice-driven.

The structurally more interesting announcement is distribution. Roblox said creators will be able to package and ship their experiences as standalone applications, outside the Roblox client. That loosens the one constraint that has defined the platform's economics, namely that every experience had to be consumed inside Roblox, and it raises the question of how the revenue split travels when the game no longer runs on Roblox's front door. Browser play is targeted for year-end 2026, with single-player offline modes staged for mid-2027 and early access promised sooner. None of it is live today.

The company also opened its 20th anniversary event, The Hunt: Roblox 20, which begins September 17, alongside the Innovation Awards.

The market has not been generous to this story. Roblox trades at $45.50, up 1.4%, but our own read is Slightly Bearish, with a 30-day sentiment average of -0.09, and short interest rose 69% to 23.42 million shares, about 3.7% of float and roughly 2.2 days to cover. Announcements dated 2027 do not resolve that. The things to watch are whether the creator economics survive standalone distribution, whether browser play actually ships by year-end, and whether the AI tool converts more players into creators or just makes existing creators faster.
