SBA Communications and tower peers rally on SpaceX tenant hopes as wireless carriers sell off
SentiSense · Published · Updated
Tower stocks rallied on Friday, Oct 9, on speculation that SpaceX could become a rent-paying tenant after agreeing to buy 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management, while the big three wireless carriers fell sharply. SBA Communications closed up 7.3% at $182.49 on the day, and its 15.1% gain is measured from the Oct 2 close, part of it before the deal. No lease or agreement between SpaceX and SBA has been reported, and the roughly $8 billion price is a Wall Street Journal report that neither company confirmed.
Tower stocks rallied and wireless carriers sold off on Friday, Oct 9, as investors priced the chance that SpaceX (SPCX) becomes a new tower tenant. SBAC closed up 7.3% at $182.49. In afternoon trading Reuters had CCI up 15.6% and AMT up 9.3%, so SBA lagged its peers, while TMUS fell 13.2%, T 10.8% and VZ 10.1%. The 15.1% SBA gain in one headline spans Oct 2 to Oct 9 (from $158.49), and part of it came on Oct 5 and Oct 6, before the deal.
The trigger was SpaceX's Oct 8 agreement, covered separately, to buy up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum from private equity firm Grain Management, subject to FCC approval. SpaceX did not disclose terms; the about $8 billion cash price comes from the Wall Street Journal, and Reuters notes neither company confirmed it.
Nothing ties SBA to SpaceX yet. Wireless Estimator stresses that no lease has been signed, and Bernstein says the purchase makes a SpaceX ground network more credible and cheaper but is not a commitment to build towers. Simply Wall St frames SpaceX as a possible new rent-paying tenant on third-party towers but says the deal does not materially change SBA's near-term catalyst of U.S. lease-up, and notes SBA affirmed its US$1.25 quarterly dividend. Goldman called the deal positive for towers and Morgan Stanley "incrementally constructive", while Evercore ISI's Kutgun Maral called it "somewhat negative" for the big three carriers.
What to watch: FCC review of the spectrum transfer, any SpaceX statement on a terrestrial build or tower leases, and whether the carrier selloff persists after a one-day repricing.
