Siri AI to Get New Chatbot-like Interface, Shipping with iOS 27 and macOS 27

Apple's new Siri AI will offer a chatbot-like interface, available on devices with iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, and visionOS 27. The new AI is built on Apple Intelligence and will be available this fall. Siri AI is powered by Google's Gemini models, but runs on Apple devices, not Google's Gemini.

AAPL took center stage at WWDC 2026 on June 8 with the unveiling of Siri AI, a ground-up rebuild of the company's virtual assistant that replaces the familiar orb-based interface with a persistent chatbot-like experience . Users on supported devices can now swipe down from the middle of the screen to surface a conversational thread where Siri accepts voice or text, maintains context across turns, and stores chat history in iCloud-synced cards. The new assistant ships this fall alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 .

Underpinning the upgrade is a licensing deal, announced in January 2026, between Apple and GOOGL. Apple agreed to pay roughly $1 billion annually for access to a custom 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model built specifically for Siri and Apple Intelligence . The heavier world-knowledge and complex-reasoning queries are routed to that Gemini-powered cloud layer through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, where Apple says data is processed without being stored or made readable to the company. On-device processing still handles simpler requests locally, preserving the privacy posture Apple has marketed .

The strategic and financial stakes are substantial on both sides. Google already pays Apple an estimated $20 billion per year to remain the default Safari search engine; the Gemini deal effectively runs in the opposite direction, with Apple writing a check to its biggest search rival to close an AI capability gap. Analysts including Gene Munster at Deepwater Asset Management have estimated the total value of the Gemini partnership could reach $5 billion over its life. For GOOGL, the arrangement monetizes Gemini infrastructure and deepens its presence inside the world's most profitable consumer hardware platform. For AAPL, it buys time to close the gap with rivals such as OpenAI and Meta while Apple's own model training matures.

Device eligibility mirrors the existing Apple Intelligence footprint: iPhone 16 and later, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads with M1 or later, and any Mac with M1 or later . Earlier Apple Intelligence-capable devices will receive Siri AI automatically when iOS 27 ships in September 2026, with no separate download required.
